Rory McIlroy moved to within three shots of the clubhouse lead with a second round 68 at the Open.

The world No.4 started his opening round disastrously before fighting back to card a 71. And the Ulsterman started impressively today when he picked up three shots in his first six holes – eights shots better than yesterday.

With the gusting wind in the opposite direction today, he dropped two shots on the back nine before a fourth birdie of the day at 17. The 2014 champion is on one-under par and in tied 11th place with heavy rain forecast later today.

Matt Kuchar is the clubhouse leader after his 71 saw him drop to four-under par. Fellow first-round leaders Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka tee off later.

Nasty crosswinds sent scores soaring with Canadian Adam Hadwin carding an 82 – including 47 on his back nine. Former champions John Daly (78) and Todd Hamilton (79) also struggled.

Kuchar said: “Conditions were really hard today, certainly what we expect coming over here, having some really challenging, trying conditions. Nearly opposite wind of what we had yesterday. So the course played completely differently. And this wind, it felt like every hole was a crosswind hole. It felt like you had to play for so much curve on the ball. The wind was so strong. It was quite a trying, challenging day.”
